I love this image. I love the perspective, and the way it captures the Lyall Bay feeling at its best.The day I spent taking photo’s for this painting was fantastically beautiful. Tuis sang everywhere and fat wood pigeons flapped noisily over head. Surf was up for a lazy day on the boards and at the southern end of the bay the water lapped pleasingly on the rocks beneath the pohutukawas. Near the air port I sat on a rock by the sea sketching and was so absorbed that I didn’t notice the sneaky wave that got me! It was a work day but the car parks were pretty full and as in the painting the surfers were out and life savers doing their practice. I have lots of my own memories in this suburb. I have a stack of memories at the black house which was my Grandma’s. It was my Dad’s family home so I have lots of fun stories he has told me involving this suburb. He went to Lyall bay school as did my other Gran who I was extra close to. I’m full of her stories as well, including passing the blacksmith on the way to the general store and remembering the hot glow that always came out.
